okay, i’ll admit it, i’m in love with south american whites. though it hasn’t always been this way.
i often notice an attitude at tastings, and i’m totally guilty, that to be taken “seriously” as a wine drinker you have to treat white wines like that co-worker who has no sense of personal space, or understands that personal business means you personally don’t give a shit. so you politely sip away waiting for the real wines to show up.
it’s unfortunate, because i’ve missed a lot of great wines with this attitude, but no more; mine eyes hath seen the light. i’ve been sucking down riesling, gewurz, rosés, chardonnay, blends, everything i used to pretty much avoid because my palate was waaay to refined, and i’ve discovered some beautiful wines that brings more than just a buzz.
this argentinean sauvignon blanc is a good example.
after the gougenheim torrontes i reviewed last week, i’m definitely a buyer in the world of argentinean whites (i’m already a sucker for malbec, who isn’t?) so when i spotted this wine for just eight bones while perusing through my local wine shop, i didn’t hesitate.
i’ve never tried an argentinean sauvignon blanc, although i’ve had a handful of chilean ones, so i was interested in seeing the difference between the two.
the nose is citrus, with some floral notes. not hot at all (or flabby, having alcohol overpower its acidity) which tends to be a problem with warm climate region sauvignon blancs. dry, clasic grapefruit flavors, lime, and deliciously balanced acidity (like a cold cold glass of lemonade.)
from my experience the chilean sauvignon blancs i’ve tasted were a lot brighter, with more intense fruit and acid. but i’ve noticed in a few different ones that the wine just died mid-palate, where this wine seems more classic in taste (though undeniably new world) but consistent throughout.
at eight dollars this wine brings plenty to make you think twice about the next argentinean white you see. i’d say 87 points, and a great buy.
