A wino’s job is never done, I’m always on the lookout for amazing wines.
About a week Vine Joy hosted a little shin-dig over at Karyn’s on Green, a vegan restaurant in Greektown. Besides some bad-ass concoctions by Ryan, bartender extraordinaire, they were also pouring sweet wines from a few small producers.
Here are the favorites:
2008 Field Recordings “Fiction”
“Lovely aromas of Maraschino cherry, $1,000,000 bills, and Crystal Pepsi…” reads winemaker Andrew Jones’ tasting notes.
While I don’t have much experience with the flavor profile of million dollar bills, I can say that at 15.8% Alcohol by volume, and with it’s jammy yet friendly fruit style, this is definitely a wine to get the party started.
$22 with shipping, available for order through Vine Joy or direct from the producer.
2006 Dominio IV Syrah “Song of an Uncaged Bird”
“Lush blackberry fruit melts into a warm chocolaty finish.” is what I scribbled into my notebook. I may have been a bit drunk, but nonetheless this is a killer Syrah.
They have been producing their wines biodynamically since 2001, and just received Demeter certification for the “Three Sleeps Vineyard” that produced the fruit for this Syrah. Their wines are legit, artistic, and you should definitely check them out.
$27 at In Fine Spirits in Andersonville.
2009 Lumos Pinot Gris “Rudolfo”
A bright, citrus filled summer-quenching nectar. Great balance, and perfect acidity. received 89 points from Wine Spectator, I later found out.
Lumos is an organic-focused Oregon winery owned by Dai Crisp. They also produce a sprite-like Gewurtraminer, and a nice mushroomy Pinot Noir, as well. Both great, although I enjoyed the Pinot Gris much more.
$15 at In Fine Spirits in Andersonville.
