I’ve previously extolled the heroics of Swirl Smell Slurp to you cats, and I mention them again because of their recent review of Lynfred Winery’s ’09 Seyval Blanc during the United Slurps of America tour.
They had this to say:
Clear, light yellow. Aromatic and perfumey nose with aromas of tropical fruit and ripe apples. On the palate the wine is floral but with an underlying acidity. Minerals, aromatic herbs, and limes in the finish, reminding me of a limey gin and tonic. I enjoy the arc of richness in the nose to the austerity of the finish. Zingy, refreshing–a nice summertime sipping wine. If it was half the price I’d stock up (and give it a higher rating).
You can check out the whole post here, which also includes a co-review with He Sipped/She Sipped, a new wine blog to the Chicago scene.
Lynfred isn’t a bad use of an afternoon if you feel like trekking out to the ‘burbs to learn a little about wine (I believe you can take the Metra pretty much right to their doorstep.) Founded by Fred and Lynn Koehler, hence the name Lyn-Fred, and apt tribute to the suburban naming meme. It is both the oldest and largest winery in Illinois.
They make the usual Cabs and Merlots etc., the occasional hybrid (such as the Seyval Blanc reviewed,) and a lot of fruit wines as well. I tried their Rhubarb wine once which was probably one of the most strangely interesting wines I’ve ever tasted.
So check them out on Twitter, on their blog, and if you feel like being a human being, in person, too:
