it’s been awhile since i’ve blogged. i went on vacation, had a couple tragedies, and then the advent of the beloved football season (and the mass overload of fantasy leauges) have all pulled me away from the wine blogosphere. but it’s not like i haven’t been drinking any wine. cheyah!

so on to a bit of that wine: torrontes is a grape i had never heard of until a few months ago. i was at a viognier tasting, and this was thrown in the middle of the pack. i was totally confused, actually, because although i’m not gary vaynerchuck or anything, i’ve usually heard of varietals even if i hadn’t tasted them. i think i pissed the guy off because i kept asking him if it was a blend.

but although malbec draws most of the praise for argentina, torrontes is the homegrown talent. malbec is, of course, comes from bordeaux, and is also planted in chile and the u.s.a., but torrontes is essentially only grown and produced in argentina. so it really is a uniquely argentinean offer to the wine world.

what really struck me at the tasting was it’s great acidity (which is what makes white wine delicious, imho,) along with a little floral play that made it interesting, so when i saw it at just $8, i really didn’t feel hesitant picking up a bottle despite not knowing the producer.

i wasn’t disappointed. the nose on this gouguenheim was pretty similar to what i had experienced before, floral, a little citrus, and maybe a dash of some grass. this wine really reminded me of lemonade, to be honest. it had delicious acidity, and although the lemon citrus flavor was strong, it definitely wasn’t tart. nicely balanced alcohol to it, with a nice lingering finish. completely 88+ points in my mind.

if you’re a lucky s.o.b. and aren’t experiencing the chill of fall yet, plan on this being your afternoon punch for a case or two.
